What is the book of 1 John about?

The book of 1 John had two purposes:

  1. To expose false teachers of Gnosticism.
  2. Gnosticism was an early form of heresy in which the central belief was that spirit is good and matter is evil.  The human body is matter and therefore evil.  God, who is wholly spirit if therefore good.
  3. Salvation was not achieved by faith in Christ but rather by special knowledge.
  4. Christ SEEMED to have a body
  5. Others said Christ joined the man Jesus at baptism and left him before he died.
  6. To give believers assurance of salvation and give eyewitness testimony to the incarnation of Christ.

The author of the book of 1 John is the apostle John.

Believers in western Asia Minor.
