What is the book of 1 Kings about?

David names his son Solomon as king upon his death.  God speaks to Solomon in his dream and will grant him anything he wishes.  Solomon chose wisdom.  Eventually he oversaw the 13 year construction of a temple for the Lord.  But Solomon was not immune to sin.  His folly was that he fell in loved and married many pagan wives against the Lord’s will.  They eventually led him astray towards worshipping false idols.  

When Solomon died, his son Rehoboam foolishly organized and divided the northern people under Jeroboam into their own nation.  The north continued worshipping idols while the south lived through some poor leaders and and some occasional good kings such as Asa and Jehoshaphat.  The prophet Elijah is then introduced and with the power of God he defeats the prophets of the false idol, Baal.
